I love this album! Dedicated to Cannonball Adderley, who inspired Nils Landgren when he was growing up, this project clearly was a labor of love. It combines tunes associated with Cannonball with originals by Landgren, and the end result is a mix of joyous swingers, slow blues, and at least one beautiful medium-tempo tune. The already great mix of musicians in the Funk Unit is augmented on one tune by the Brecker Brothers on trumpet and tenor sax, and Bernard Purdie on drums.Adding to the fun are voice samples from Cannonball before a few tunes, and one by the Reverend Jesse Jackson, urging us all to "Walk tall!" For me, this whole disc is a joy, not least because Esbjorn Svensson is at the electric piano. Before he went his own way with his trio, he was a terrific funk player.This is soul-jazz and funk at its best. At least that's my opinion. I love it!This review is not at all objective, but is based on my taste and listening experience.
